The German has been hesitant to sign a new deal at the club according to reports and the Gunners are looking to reunite him with the former Dortmund players at Arsenal.
Arsenal will lose Aaron Ramsey to Juventus this summer which opens up the need for a new central midfielder. Gotze is more than capable of playing the box-to-box role and Unai Emery could make a move for him to fill in the void left by the Welshman.
However, Gotze’s career has gone downhill ever since his world cup winning goal against Argentina in 2014. He returned to Borussia Dortmund after his unsuccessful stint at German Champions Bayern Munich.
The 26-year-old was once one of the brightest prospects in world football but injuries played a huge part in denying him the opportunity to fulfil his potential at the top level.
Gotze has regained a bit of form this campaign, having scored 7 and assisted 7 more in Dortmund’s brilliant campaign in the Bundesliga.
His productive campaign wasn’t enough for the Black and Yellows to dethrone Bayern who sealed the title on the final day and Dortmund finished the campaign as runners up, just two points behind the top spot.
Gotze will be a huge loss for Dortmund if he decides to leave this summer but having him as an option to replace Aaron Ramsey could prove to be a massive gamble, especially when he hasn’t played in the number 8 role for a long time.
The German has mainly played as an attacking midfielder or as a false 9 this campaign, areas that are well covered at Arsenal.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette have the striker’s role cemented for themselves, while Mesut Ozil has regained the trust of Unai Emery in the second half of the campaign.
Moreover, Gotze has struggled when he has faced a physical side. The Premier League’s physicality could potentially be a huge problem for the German international to overcome next season if he decides to make a move to the Emirates.

Mario Gotze is a huge gamble that Arsenal cannot afford to make at this stage. Unai Emery should look elsewhere for a player who is more suited to his style and is capable of dealing with the physical side of the game to replace Aaron Ramsey in the summer.
