Arsenal fans have reacted to Patrice Evra’s claims that their team are like “babies” following the 1-0 loss to Sheffield United on Monday night.
Lys Mousset’s strike on the half-hour mark gave the newly-promoted Blades a 1-0 win against the Gunners at Bramall Lane.
Unai Emery’s team could have moved up to third with a win but they struggled to create chances and once again looked shaky in defence.
Evra famously referred to Arsenal as “babies” after his Manchester United beat them in the Champions League semi-finals in 2009.
And the Frenchman, who was a guest on Sky Sports for Monday’s game, admitted that nothing has changed.
“I used to call them ‘my babies’ 10 years ago, and they are still, when I look at them and think they are ‘my babies’… that’s the truth – I’m not being disrespectful when I say that.
“They look pretty, but they don’t look like a winning team. They like playing good football, but I was so happy to play against them, because I knew I was going to win.
“Even when Robin van Persie came, and on the first day I shook his hand, and I said, ‘welcome to a man’s club’. At the beginning, he was upset, but after one month he said, ‘you were completely right, Patrice’.
“I just don’t see any leadership. I don’t see any character or any personality. They look weak mentally.”
Using language like this would most likely insult fans of most teams, but many Gunners fans agreed with Evra’s comments.
Some took to social media after the loss to Sheffield United to vent their frustrations.
“He speaks nothing but the truth,” wrote one fan.
“Sadly ….but it’s the truth,” said another.
While one Arsenal fan said: “Yeh he is right, Spot on, we have been like this for years”.
And another fan said: “Indeed Unai Emery has worsened us in this respect”.
After a solid start to the new season it is quickly becoming apparent that Arsenal still have a lot of work to do to rid themselves of old habits.
