David Luiz reckons a title charge is on – but Arsenal fans aren’t convinced.
The Gunners have not won the league since their unbeaten 2003-04 campaign.
With Liverpool top of the pile – and Manchester City hot on their heels – getting involved in a title scrap doesn’t look realistic for Arsenal.
However, Luiz wasn’t willing to indulge in defeatism.
“For me, if you start something, and we’ve just started the Premier League and all of the competitions, if you don’t think you can win the competition then you won’t start anything in your life,” Luiz told NBC Sports.
“I want to win titles with Arsenal. I want to improve and adapt myself for the style of Arsenal, as a club and how the manager wants us to play. I think we can do that together.
“My vision, my ambition and my will is always to fight for the title and between the club, the players and the coach, we have the possibility to fight for the title. I think this club deserves to shine again.”
Despite the Brazilian’s rallying cry, the Emirates faithful couldn’t take his comments seriously.
“How about let’s win games we are supposed to win for once,” said one fan on social media.
“We sure can, if Liverpool or City wasn’t in the Premiership we’d win it,” added a second.
“Obviously, we have 3-4 players come out every season saying we can win the league when they know it’s b******s,” said a third.
Not all supporters were negative, though.
“Scenes when we go undefeated the rest of the season and win,” joked an observer.
“Just want to point out that we have lost only one game this season and also we are yet to play our full starting 11,” pointed out one upbeat Arsenal fan.
“I’m not saying he is right neither am I saying he is wrong but at the moment, it’s Liverpool’s title to lose however it’s the EPL and anything can happen.”
Arsenal travel to Sheffield United on Monday evening [8pm kick off].
