Arsenal fans love Mesut Ozil’s classy Arsene Wenger tribute

Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil paid tribute to former manager Arsene Wenger following his 2019 Legends of Football award.

The Frenchman was inducted into the Legends of Football Hall of Fame on Monday night.

The event in London acknowledged the 69-year-old’s illustrious career and work with the Nordoff Robbins charity.

Guests at the event collectively raised £521,000 for the cause, with the charity using music to enrich lives of people with disability.

Sir Alex Ferguson sent a message to his old rival at the event, while a host of former Arsenal stars who played under Wenger attended.

Robin van Persie, Ray Parlour, David Seaman, Kolo Toure and Robert Pires were among those at the event.

And one current Gunners player who has since recognised Wenger’s fully deserved accolade is Ozil.

The German has a strong relationship with the former Arsenal boss who largely helped lure him to the Emirates Stadium from Real Madrid six years ago.

The 30-year-old played under Wenger in north London for five full seasons and was one of the manager’s most influential and important stars during that final period.

The Legends of Football Twitter page posted how they were honouring Wenger and quoted him as saying: “In football, light feet get you closer to God.”

Ozil responded to the tweet by posting: “Congrats on this award, Mon. Wenger. Well deserved. Thanks again for everything you’ve done for me and the whole @Arsenal family. You have huge respect for the beautiful game and we’ll always have huge respect for you. #M10 #YaGunnersYa @LoFootball”

Arsenal’s No.10 may not have the best relationship with his current manager, Unai Emery.

But his bond with Wenger is clearly still strong more than a year on since the former boss stepped down.

And fans loved Ozil’s personal tribute on Twitter.

Arsene Wenger posed with his award during the Legends of Football 2019 event

One supporter posted a picture of the pair and captioned it: “Father and son”.

Another replied to Ozil: “Classy of you”.

A third posted a photo of Wenger kissing Ozil from when Arsenal won the FA Cup and captioned it: “I’m not crying, you’re crying.”

One Arsenal fan acknowledged: “None of the current squad members has mentioned this, put some respect onto Ozil’s name. Classy player”.

Another put: “Great sign of respect.”

“The manager who treated you like his own son,” another tweeted.

And a final one posted: “This is a really a good gesture to Arsene Wenger. I hope Unai includes you in the squad very soon. You don’t deserve the treatment that you are receiving.”

Arsenal are back in action after the international break on Monday, October 21 when they travel to newly promoted Sheffield United.

The Gunners’ highest earner Ozil, though, is unlikely to start the game, having been regularly left out of the matchday squad by Emery of late.
