But reports in Brazil claim Arsenal also attempted to pull off a stunning move for Real Madrid sensation Vinicius Junior Brazilian publication UOL Esporte claim Arsenal, along with PSG made enquiries for the talented forward in the summer in an unlikely loan move.
Arsenal’s technical director Edu was the man behind the move with the Brazilian looking to sign his fellow countryman.
The teenager joined Los Blancos in 2018 for £38.7m from Flamengo having made a name for himself in his homeland.
He managed just 18 La Liga appearances last season but is already impressing Zinedine Zidane and is looking to stake his claim alongside Karim Benzema and Gareth Bale this term.
And while a move to Arsenal seemed unlikely, Gunners fans have been left in awe of Edu’s ambition.
“What a move that would have been,” said one fan.
“Edu has big balls and I love it,” said another.
“Wow, Edu didn’t come to f*** around. Great to see!” added a third.
One supporter said: “Edu targeting him and obviously putting Martinelli on arsenal radar is very exciting for the future.
