Arsenal edge closer to Nicolas Pepe transfer as Gunners set medical date

Arsenal are set to make their fourth signing of the summer.

Teenage duo Gabriel Martinelli and William Saliba have both joined permanently.

While Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos has joined on a season-long loan.

But Arsenal are believed to be on the edge of unveiling their first blockbuster signing of the summer.

According to Sky Sports, Lille winger Pepe has agreed to join the Gunners.

The 24-year-old was one of the stars of the Ligue 1 season last term, scoring 22 goals.

Usually deployed as a right-winger, Pepe can also play up front, and will no doubt provide Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang with some serious competition.

The Ivory Coast international is expected to join for £72m, which will be paid in instalments over the next four years.

A move for Crystal Palace forward Wilfried Zaha broke down this summer due to financial issues.

But Lille’s agreement to spread Arsenal’s club-record fee over a reported five separate payments has given the Gunners a chance to secure his signature.

And Sky Sports claim that Pepe will complete a medical with the north London side “within days”.

Arsenal boss Unai Emery had made a new first-team winger a priority signing this summer, with Alex Iwobi his only out-and-out wide man.

Pepe has been on holiday for the second half of this month following his nation’s exit from the Africa Cup of Nations.

Ivory Coast lost to eventual winners Algeria in the quarter-final stage.

Pepe started three of those matches, but was an unused substitute in the Algeria defeat.
