The Spanish midfielder’s loan move from Real Madrid was announced earlier, and less than three hours later, Saliba’s switch has been confirmed on a long-term contract.
The centre-half, though, will remain with Saint-Etienne on a season-long loan, with Unai Emery set to have the 18-year-old as part of his squad from the summer of 2020.
However, in terms of a purchase for the future, Emery is delighted to have beaten off strong competition from Tottenham to lure £27m Saliba to the red half of north London.
Emery revealed: “We’re delighted William is joining us.”
“He will stay in France next season for more experience”
Outlining the interest from Tottenham, as well as other European clubs, Emery added: “Many teams wanted him but he decided he wanted to come to us and be part of our future.”
Saliba will continue his development in France for the 2019/20 campaign.
And Emery added: “He will stay in France next season for more experience and then we look forward to him joining our group.”
