Arsenal ace Mesut Ozil has played just 71 minutes of Premier League football this season.
His involvement early on was limited after he was allegedly caught up in a London gang war with team-mate Sead Kolasinac.
However, he has yet to re-instate himself in Unai Emery’s squad.
And it seems he will have his work cut out if he is do so.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of Sunday’s clash with Bournemouth, Emery revealed where Ozil currently sat in his plans.
When asked about why Ozil was not in the squad, the Spaniard said: “It’s because other players deserve it more.”
The decision seems like a bold call for the Gunners’ highest earner and one of their star names.
But Arsenal legend Kevin Campbell has implored Emery for taking a stand and not letting the German gain a spot purely due to his status.
The former striker tweeted: “Great to hear this from UE. No more privilege it’s about hard work.”
It seems many Gunners fans disagreed with Emery though, taking to Twitter to share their opinions and defend the German.
“Ozil plays better against small teams. Play him there and bench him against big 6,” one wrote.
As a second added: “Ozil can’t play with a coach without a style of playing.”
“I’m not just happy with the treatment he’s getting from the coach, he doesn’t deserve that,” a third shared in defence of Ozil.
And a fourth explained: “If he can be playing xhaka I see no reason he can’t play Ozil. Ozil absence is why Pepe is still struggling.”
