Arsenal star Mateo Guendouzi has revealed the hilarious way he found out he was called up to the French national squad.
The Frenchman received his first call-up to the senior squad yesterday after Manchester United’s Paul Pogba was forced out with an ankle injury.
Guendouzi is in his second season at the Emirates, where the 20-year-old is a regular starter.
He represented France in the U21 European Championships in the summer.
But Didier Deschamps has now called the midfielder up to the World Cup winning squad.
And the Gunners star has revealed the hilarious way he found out about his place in Les Bleus squad.
Speaking on the national side’s Twitter channel, he says in French: “Actually, I was taking a nap and someone knocked on the door.
“I didn’t answer because I was sleeping, I swear.
“Then my phone rang and it was the coach on the phone.
“He said ‘It’s me, I knocked’.
“Obviously, I opened the door straightaway and he said ‘Mateo, come here, we need to talk’.”
The U21 coach, Sylvain Ripoll, took the opportunity to play a prank on the 20-year-old.
“He said ‘I like you very much, but you have to leave,” Guendouzi added.
“I said ‘what do you mean, I have to leave’.
“He said ‘actually, you’re going with the national French team.”
Guendouzi went on to reveal his reaction to the news.
The midfielder continued: “At first I couldn’t believe it. Ten minutes before I was asleep.
“The coach and I had a good talk – he explained it well.
“That’s it, he told me I was in the national French team.
“It’s a dream. I’m glad I just showered for the sake of my awareness.”
