Rob Holding has suggested, in comments reported by Football London, that Gabriel Martinelli is a centre-back’s nightmare, and lauded the way that his Arsenal teammate never gives up.
Martinelli has taken little time to excite the Emirates faithful. The 18-year-old is still awaiting his first Premier League start. But he has scored four goals in five appearances in all competitions, with braces coming against Nottingham Forest and Standard Liege.
And Holding suggested that the summer signing is the kind of player that he would not like to come up against.
“He never stops running, as a centre-half it’s a nightmare. You want someone who’ll give up but he never does that,” he said, as reported by Football London. “Some of the headed goals he has scored in the games against Nottingham Forest and Standard Liege have been really good.
“He’s really close with Emiliano Martinez, he translates for him when he’s picking up English. He’s making an effort which is important.”
The signs certainly suggest that Martinelli could become a special player. He has already scored a variety of goals, heading in crosses and finding the top corner from outside the box.
Martinelli is somewhat unfortunate that Arsenal have so much quality going forward. But the Europa League does provide the Brazilian with a fantastic opportunity to stake his claim for more game-time.
He will be hoping to make an impression against Vitoria on Thursday. Arsenal can put one foot in the knockout stages with a win against the Portuguese side. They have already picked up two victories, and will move at least five points clear of third with another win.
