Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal has vowed to see out the final year of his contract, despite the club being linked with Kieran Tierney.
The Spaniard has no desire to leave the Emirates just yet, despite recent speculation linking him with a move to Real Sociedad.
The 33-year-old said (quoted by football.london): “That’s all rumours. I belong at Arsenal. I still have a contract. My idea is to stay here.
“It’s a great club and I feel really comfortable playing for Arsenal. My idea is to continue playing here.”
In the lead up to the summer it was thought that Monreal would leave for free, with the club having never officially announced an extension to his contract.
Monreal has been with the Gunners since 2013 after signing from Malaga, meaning he is one the club’s longest-serving players.
Arsenal fans will hope to see the club successfully sign Kieran Tierney this summer, which would see £70,000-a-week star Monreal (Spotrac) drop to the bench.
The Spaniard has been a great servant for Arsenal but he no longer possesses the same pace and dynamism as when he first signed.
He would be a solid backup for Tierney, and would also be able to fill in as a left-side centre back if needed.
The Gunners surely cannot be heading into 2019/20 relying on him as their main man though, so it’s vital for them to wrap up a deal for Tierney as soon as possible. The club are reported (BBC Sport) to have had a new £25 million offer rejected.
