Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans has revealed he was indeed the interest of some ‘big clubs’ in the summer transfer window.
The midfielder completed a £40 million permanent move to the King Power Stadium (BBC Sport) after impressing on loan last term.
The Belgian wowed with his technical ability and goal involvements, and has made a bright start to the 2019/20 season.
A number of clubs were reportedly sniffing around the former Monaco man after proving himself capable in English football.
Arsenal were said to be keen on the 22-year-old, as were Tottenham Hotspur (Daily Star, April 2019).
Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was also said to be a big fan of the playmaker.
Speaking about the rumours, Tielemans said (quoted by Goal): “During the transfer window, I was happy of the interest of certain big club.
“I needed to make a choice for my young career and I think it was the right one. To arrive off the back of a €45 million (/£40 million) transfer doesn’t change anything. They already knew me at Leicester. My loan spell went very good. I wanted to continue playing in this club.”
Tielemans could really flourish at Leicester under Brendan Rodgers.
He is still very young and there is plenty of time to make a move to a bigger club if he continues to prove himself.
He’s certainly looked great so far as a permanent Foxes player, which must frustrate Arsenal fans in particular, who have watched Granit Xhaka underwhelm in their midfield.
Some Tottenham fans may also be looking on enviously, with Moussa Sissoko struggling to show the form of last season so far.
