Arsenal’s hopes of being able to sign RB Leipzig defender, Dayot Upamecano this summer appear to be shrinking, with Real Madrid now emerging as contenders to land the Frenchman.
Upamecano is a long-term target for Mikel Arteta, who is keen to bolster a defence that is in need of new additions. This, despite the return of William Saliba from a loan spell with St Etienne.
But according to Mundo Deportivo, Spanish title winners, Real Madrid, are firmly in the race to land the young star, who has only just signed a new deal with Leipzig in the last few days.
However, the new deal is said to be more to protect the German club. It means they can now demand a hefty fee for their man, rather than risk losing him on the cheap.
It is believed that Madrid boss, Zinedine Zidane, is a big fan of Upamecano. Indeed, the report from MD claims Zidane sees the 21-year-old as the successor to legendary Los Blancos figure, Sergio Ramos.
Hopes fading with Madrid involved but Arteta is building something – TBR View
Everyone in football knows that if Real Madrid gets involved, then big sums of money and temptation from players is going to play a massive part in how things pan out.
Unfortunately for Arsenal, they would find it hard to compete with the Spanish giants if they did move for Upamecano.
But, Mikel Arteta is doing something right at the club. With that, Upamecano might see the recent FA Cup win, plus the fact he is apparently Arteta’s ‘dream signing’, and decide a move to North London is indeed for him.
