Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s unexpected goalscoring trait when used on the wing

Arsenal bosses Arsene Wenger and Mikel Arteta have both deployed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in a wide role at times in a bid to fit another striker into the team despite his goalscoring ability as a forward.

The Gabon skipper has stated in the past that he is happy to help the cause by playing slightly out of position, and figures suggest he scores more goals when shifted to the wing.

The former Borussia Dortmund man has a tremendous record of 49 goals in 75 league outings and has subsequently been linked with moves to both Barcelona and Real Madrid.

The 30-year-old has played up top in 65.7 per cent of his Premier League outings and out wide in the remaining 34.3 per cent.

When on the left, Aubameyang has a goal scoring ratio of 0.83 goals per 90, and a rate of 0.57 as a striker.

On the right he has a record of just 0.5 per 90, making that his least fruitful position of the three.

The lightning quick forward has had to make room for Alexandre Lacazette during times that the Frenchman is at the top of his game, with their partnership coming good over the past two seasons.

He said earlier this season: “I like to play as a striker but when the team needs me on the wing I go and I try my best.”

Having previously mentioned: “I don’t mind playing on the left if Laca is in the centre. We both want to do our best for the team.

“There is a spark between us when we are both on the pitch together.”

Aubameyang’s current contract is set to expire in the summer of 2021, leaving Real Madrid considering a move.

Arteta has previously stated his desire for the forward to stay, while admitting that his team’s chances of glory will need to improve should that he the case.

“We will have to do that at some stage before the end of the season for sure and we will see the intentions that we have (and) his intentions,” said the Spaniard.

“Where we are sitting in (the table at) that moment. I think it is difficult to predict that context right now.

“For me it is very easy. I want to keep him under any circumstances.”
