Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang ‘wanted Chelsea deal in January’ but move collapsed

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang priced himself out of a move to Stamford Bridge as Chelsea refused to match his wage demands.

Arsenal’s star goalscorer was reportedly open to a controversial mid-season switch across London.

Frank Lampard has since secured the signing of Germany hitman Timo Werner from RB Leipzig.

And back at the start of the year, it was clear the Blues boss needed a top quality frontman to lead the line for Chelsea.

Aubameyang would have certainly fit the bill, but the 31-year-old wanted a bumper pay package to ditch the Gunners.

The Gabon international’s contract at the Emirates Stadium expires in 2021, and Arsenal face having to sell their captain if an agreement over an extension is not reached.

While he assessed his options earlier in 2020, prior to the coronavirus crisis, contact was made with Chelsea on behalf of Aubameyang, according to the Daily Mail .

His request for a huge salary saw talks collapse and put an end to the prospect of Aubameyang teaming up with Lampard and his squad.

Mikel Arteta is desperate to keep Aubameyang long term, with today’s FA Cup final against Chelsea at Wembley potentially his last game for Arsenal.
