Arsenal looked set for another disappointing Premier League result when Ainsley Maitland-Niles was sent off yesterday’s first half against Aston Villa with the Gunners 1-0 down.
The Gunners also slipped 2-1 behind in the second half, but Matteo Guendouzi was among the players who helped drag Unai Emery’s side to a 3-2 victory despite the man disadvantage.
And on Match of the Day 2, 10:55pm, 22/09/19, Alan Shearer was full of praise for the £40,000-a-week (Spotrac) midfielder, stating: “When you consider they went down to 10 men, the change in attitude was incredible. Guendouzi was magnificent in the second half, they needed a warrior and he stood up.
“We’ve questioned Arsenal’s character enough time and we’ve got to give them praise. What a performance in the second half.”
TBR’s View – Guendouzi showing the importance of intensity and never giving in
There’s no doubt that Guendouzi is a talented midfielder, but in terms of pure technical ability, he is not at a level yet to elevate Arsenal’s midfield back to where it needs to be.
But he is still adding a great deal to the Gunners’ engine room in terms of constant energy, always wanting the ball and a never-say-die attitude.
That’s something Arsenal have lacked for far too long and bringing that to the side has cemented Guendouzi’s spot in the starting eleven this season.
