Arsenal pushing hard for this proven Bundesliga star would make them a solid defensive unit under Unai Emery

Should Arsenal consider signing Lukas Klostermann?

Arsenal have been handed a transfer blow as RB Leipzig’s sporting director has confirmed that Lukas Klostermann is in talks with the club over a new contract.

The North Londonders were linked with the right-back after releasing Stephan Lichtsteiner as a free agent in the summer transfer window.

But due to the limited financial support, boss Unai Emery couldn’t bolster the squad in all areas. Emery has utilized versatile midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles to fill the gap left by the injured Hector Bellerin and Lichtsteiner’s departure.

Klostermann came off an impressive term with Bundesliga club Leipzig, scoring five goals and setting up a teammate once in his 26 appearances last season. He has also kept himself within the discipline, receiving just 1 yellow card in those performances.

If Arsenal sign Klostermann in the winter transfer window, preferably before he signs a new deal, it will a huge boost for the Gunners. He would be the ideal backup for first-choice right-back Bellerin.

Arsenal cannot depend on Maitland-Niles as their second-choice right-back because of his poor disciple on the pitch. Even though Maitland-Niles has provided two assists in his six Premier League appearances this season, he has already received a yellow and red card this season.

In his 16 league appearances last season, he was in the referee’s book three times – with two yellow cards and one red.

Klostermann will not be just warming the bench at the Emirates Stadium but will also compete with Bellerin for the starting line-up.

A healthy competition between the top two world-class full-backs would obviously bring the best out of them. Bellerin was in top form last season before getting injured, setting up teammates five times in just 19 matches. However, he was also booked three times.

With a trio of lethal attackers in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Alexandre Lacazette and Nicolas Pepe, Emery must consider signing Klostermann to bolster his defensive options.
