Arsenal loan manager Knapper to meet starlet Osei-Tutu after right back suffers racial abuse

Arsenal will send one of their senior members of staff to Germany to see Jordi Osei-Tutu after he was racially abused in a pre-season friendly.

Osei-Tutu, on loan at VFL Bochum, will be visited by Arsenal’s loan manager Ben Knapper.

Knapper will offer his support to the starlet in person following the shocking first-half incident this week.

Right back Osei-Tutu was called ‘a black c***’ by an opposition player while playing for his German loan club against Swiss side FC Gallen.

Arsenal called the abuse ‘unacceptable’ and anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out labelled it ‘sickening.’

Kick It Out said: ‘Before the season has even begun a young player has endured sickening racist abuse.

‘If anyone is in any doubt about the devastating impact such abuse can have, look at the footage of Jordi Osei-Tutu.

‘After last season we can only hope this is not a grim sign of things to come. We have offered support to Jordi alongside Arsenal FC his parent club.’ VFL Bochum said: ‘VFL vehemently condemns all forms of racism, Jordi we stand behind you.’

Both Knapper and academy manager Per Mertesacker were quickly in contact with 20-year-old right-back after the game.

And Knapper will follow that up with a visit to check on Osei-Tutu underlining Arsenal’s concern, the seriousness of the matter and to back up the support he has received from Bochum.

Osei-Tutu was initially reduced to tears following the incident and left feeling helpless following the flashpoint.

After walking off defiant Osei-Tutu composed himself and returned to play the rest of the first and part of the second half as he was determined not to let his abuser drive him out of the game.

Osei-Tutu, who will get his first taste of senior football through this loan, also never considered cutting it short to return to London.

St Gallen appeared to deny that any racist abuse had taken place, claiming the player assured them he had ‘adhered’ to club principles.

A statement read: ‘FC St.Gallen 1879 makes it clear that it strongly condemns all forms of racism and discrimination. Such misconduct would be sanctioned immediately.

‘Our players have a respectful relationship with each other regardless of origin, skin colour or religion. In a clarifying conversation with the managers, the player concerned credibly assured that he had also adhered to this club principle yesterday in the match against VfL Bochum.’
