Arsenal are interested in signing Bruno Guimaraes, the president of current club Athletico Paranaense has confirmed.
They have received positive feedback on Guimaraes after deploying their scouts to watch the Brazilian in action.
He has impressed for Athletico Paranaense leading to a bid already being lodged by Benfica.
President Mario Celso Patraglia has confirmed Arsenal are also keen – but their desire to wait until the summer could see them miss out as other clubs circle.
“Yes it’s true. Yesterday came the official offer from Benfica to sign Bruno Guimaraes,” Petraglia told Portuguese outlet O Jogo .
“Let’s study Benfica’s offer. On Monday we will meet the club board to assess this situation.
“Arsenal are interested, but will only make an offer towards the end of the season.”
Arsenal are set to prioritise a move for a centre-back in January after losing Calum Chambers for the rest of the season.
And with club bosses reportedly warning Mikel Arteta he will have limited funds after their summer spending spree, a move for Guimaraes, a team-mate of Gabriel Martinelli for Brazil Under-23s, might have to wait.
The likes of Jerome Boateng, Dayot Upamecano, John Stones and Nathan Ake have been touted as possible options in their search for a defender, a position Arteta has confirmed he is keen to strengthen.
“My obligation is to give my opinion on the things we can improve,” he said this month.
“Obviously we have a bad injury with Calum a few days ago that will change our plans at the back.
“The reality is we will not be able to do much. I’m more concerned about getting players back from injury and try to improve the players I have here, get everybody on board and understanding what we’re trying to do.
“And if something extra comes up and we think it is the right opportunity to improve what we have, then let’s do it.”
