Down to 10 men and trailing Aston Villa 1-0 at half-time, things were not going well for Arsenal at the Emirates yesterday.
The Gunners’ excellent home form kept their top four hopes alive last season before their campaign trailed off with the finishing line in sight.
Judging by the opening 45 minutes yesterday, Arsenal’s 60,000 capacity home may not be such a fortress this year.
But the north Londoners turned things around, displaying impressive resilience in the second half to snatch a remarkable 3-2 win.
Having been at Arsenal for less than two months, one would probably not expect Dani Ceballos, on loan from Real Madrid, to be overly emotionally invested in the club.
Yet the Spaniard’s celebrations were among the most exuberant of all the Arsenal stars after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a late winner.
Footage posted on the club’s official Twitter page showed Ceballos, Mesut Ozil, Bukayo Saka and others watching on from the bench with the score tied at 2-2.
The midfielder, who had been brought off after 72 minutes, had his hands clasped to his face in nervous anticipation.
But once the Gabon star’s shot hit the back of the net, Ceballos jumped up and sprinted down the touchline towards his team-mates.
And the midfielder’s spontaneous response didn’t go unnoticed by Gooners on social media channels.
“Announce Ceballos as passion merchant and lifetime contract after that,” tweeted one fan.
” @DaniCeballos46 Too much love for our club,” added another supporter, alongside various heart emojis.
A third Arsenal fan wrote: “I absolutely love Ceballos man. Please hold him hostage.”
Wesley had put the visitors in front for the second time after Nicolas Pepe cancelled out John McGinn’s opener from the penalty spot.
But Calum Chambers’ neat finish put the hosts on level terms before Aubameyang’s dead-ball winner.
“The team spirit was amazing, we need to continue working and improving things,” said Unai Emery after the win.
“Aston Villa is a good team and an organised team. After this I hope we can improve and be strong. Together with the supporters we will be strong for the matches and hopefully improve.
“It is our challenge to improve defensively. They didn’t have a lot of chances to score.”
