Arsenal have been hit by a new injury blow with the club confirming on Arsenal.com that Alexandre Lacazette has been ruled out for ‘several weeks’ with an ankle problem.
Lacazette has been struggling to overcome the injury since sustaining an ankle issue during our Emirates Cup clash with Lyon in pre-season and he’s been forced to play through the pain barrier in recent weeks.
The Frenchman didn’t feature during our first game at Newcastle United but it seemed he has recovered after playing 71 minutes during the victory over Burnley the following weekend.
However, Lacazette was back on the bench and only played a handful of minutes during the defeat at Liverpool before playing a key role in our 2-2 draw with Tottenham before the international break.
It was reported that his withdrawal in the North London Derby was due to cramp but it appears Laca may have aggravated his niggling ankle problem as the club have now confirmed he’s been ruled out for a number of weeks.
Arsenal medics assessed the strikers ankle upon his return to training and it’s been determined that Lacazette needs complete rest in order to finally overcome the issue. No fixed time-frame has been put on his recovery but the club says he’s expected back at some point in October.
A statement on Arsenal.com said:
Left ankle. After assessments to an ongoing ankle issue, we have advised that Alex will need to rest and strengthen his ankle to regain full fitness. Alex has been playing through this injury for several weeks. He is likely to be back in action in October.
This is a huge blow as just as Emery got his entire squad back in full training, we lose one of our key players for a prolonged period of time and are left with just Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as a senior option up front.
Aubameyang will certainly have to carry the can during Premier League games against Watford, Aston Villa and Manchester United this month while the game against Bournemouth at the start of October is also likely to come too soon for Lacazette.
The Frenchman will also miss Europa League games against Frankfurt and Standard Liege as well as the League Cup clash with Nottingham Forest so Emery is going to have to use the kids as it would be madness to play Aubameyang in the cups.
Let’s hope he makes a swift recovery but it looks like Laca won’t be back before the next international break so he’ll be targetting a return against Sheffield United on October 20th.
