Any plans Arsenal had to sign Daniele Rugani on loan this month have surely now gone out of the window, after Merih Demiral suffered a serious knee injury on Sunday.
According to Sky Sports, the Turkey international has sustained damage to his anterior cruciate ligament and will require surgery.
The centre-half will likely miss the remainder of the 2019/20 season as a result.
It is a bitter blow for the 21-year-old, who had only just started to get a run of games for Juventus.
Demiral was playing back-up to Leonardo Bonucci and Matthijs de Ligt earlier in the season, but was named in the starting XI for the fifth straight match against AS Roma by Maurizio Sarri.
The injury means he will now not be leaving the club this month as has been the topic of conversation over the past couple of months.
Arsenal had been linked with Demiral, but the talk had quietened down of late with the Gunners expected to be only able to loan players this month.
What Demiral’s injury does mean, is that the Gunners will now struggle to sign his teammate Rugani.
TBR’s view – Arsenal may have to look elsewhere
Arsenal were linked with a loan move for Rugani in the summer and again in December (Daily Star), but it now looks as though they’ll have to abandon any lingering interest they had.
Juve surely aren’t going to allow him to depart now with Demiral now out for the foreseeable, especially since Giorgio Chiellini is also sidelined with a knee injury.
Sarri is short at the back, so any Gunners approach could be swiftly knocked back.
